A little Bit About the Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks are an Atlanta-based American professional basketball team. The Hawks are a member of the Eastern Conference Southeast Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team's home games are held at State Farm Arena.

The History of the Atlanta Hawks

The Buffalo Bisons, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL) founded by Ben Kerner and Leo Ferris in 1946 in Buffalo, New York, can be traced back to the team's beginnings. After 38 days in Buffalo, the team changed its name to the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and relocated to Moline, Illinois. They entered the NBA in 1949 after the NBL and the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged, and Red Auerbach was their coach for a short time.

Kerner relocated the team to Milwaukee in 1951, and the Hawks became their new name. Kerner and the team relocated to St. Louis in 1955, winning their only NBA title in 1958 and qualifying for the NBA Finals in 1957, 1960, and 1961. In each of their four trips to the NBA Finals, the Hawks faced the Boston Celtics. Kerner decided to sell the St. Louis Hawks to Thomas Cousins and former Georgia Governor Carl Sanders in 1968, and the team relocated to Atlanta.

What have the Hawks made so far?

At 60 seasons, the Hawks have the second-longest championship drought in the NBA (after the Sacramento Kings). When the club was based in St. Louis, it won its only NBA championship and was present in the NBA Finals 4 times.

In the meantime, they had gone 48 years in any format without advancing it to the previous playoffs' second round before attempting to break through in 2015. The Hawks, on the other hand, are one of only 4 NBA teams in the twenty-first century to have been eligible for the playoffs in 10successive seasons. Between 2008 and 2017, they were able to accomplish this.

Who are their Rivals?

Boston Celtics

Though the two have encountered each other since the 1949–50 season, when the then-Tri-Cities Blackhawks entered the NBA, the Celtics–Hawks fierce competition has spanned for over 50 years in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association.

After four years of a stopover in Milwaukee, the Blackhawks were unable to pitch a genuinely competitive team till they relocated to St. Louis as the St. Louis Hawks. The Celtics have defeated the Hawks ten times in the NBA playoffs and four times in the NBA Finals, with the Celtics winning ten of the twelve series and three of the four NBA Finals. The Hawks have only conquered the Celtics two times among 11 NBA Playoff series, they have always succeeded in making their encounters with them unforgettable. In 2016, the competition heated up when Hawks All-Star center Al Horford left the team to join the Celtics.

Orlando Magic

The Atlanta Hawks and the Orlando Magic have a fierce rivalry that stems primarily from playoff tournaments and the growing celebrity status of Dwight Howard and Josh Smith, both of whom were drafted in the 2004 NBA draft and grew up in Georgia.

In the NBA playoffs in 1996, 2010, and 2011, the two teams confronted each other thrice. The Magic swept the Hawks in the 2010 playoffs after defeating them in five matches in the second round of the 1996 playoffs. In the first round of the 2011 playoffs, the Hawks defeated the Magic 4–2.
